On May 14th I went to the virtual exhibit of Frida Kahlo the famous Mexican Artist. Whilst I had loved a movie I had seen about her life and work, many years ago, I was disappointed in this event. It seemed to me a bit of a desperate attempt to keep up the idea of a virtual show but not quite able to illustrate the depth of the artist. Frida painted hundreds of portraits during her life and about 85% of them were of herself. She seemed obsessed with the body and many of her paintings illustrate her fascination with identity and death, so not exactly uplifting.
We know she suffered a serious accident when she was about 18 which resulted her being in bed, flat on her back for a very long time and this is when she started painting. There is no doubt she overcame some great hurdles to achieve so much fame. Indeed, one of her paintings recently sold at auction for just under $35 million. The movie was only about 40 mins and the choice of music did nothing to inspire me. These remarks are strictly personal and it will be interesting to hear how others found the experience of a visit to the Star Building to see the work of Frida.
